IEP MEDIATION FACILITATION

The purpose of public education is for all children to have full access to educational opportunities and to receive the most appropriate education and appropriate services needed according to his/her needs and special circumstances. Sometimes parents and school personnel do not agree on the services and/or accommodations a student with a disability should receive under the Individuals with Disabilties Education Act (IDEA). The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was established by the government to ensure that children with disabilities have instruction that meets their unique needs. The IDEA is a federal la that requires public schools to provide a Free Appropriate Public Education to children with disabilities.

As a contract mediator with the Ohio Department of Education/Office for Exceptional Children, I work with parents, special education directors, parent advocates, teachers, school personnel, and attorney’s to resolve those issues in order that the child may continue to receive the most appropriate education plan available. In mediation it is encouraged that parents and school personnel work together and to think ‘outside the box’ to develop agreements and Individual Education Plans (IEP’s) and not use a ‘cookie-cutter’ approach to the educational needs of a child. It is parents who know his/her child better than anyone and therefore their involvement in the education process is crucial for the child to succeed.
